The Vietnam Industry Innovation Research (VIIR) is a joint initiative between VinUniveristy and the Portulans Institute (PI). PI was founded and was presided by Professor Soumitra Dutta, Dean of the Saïd Business School at Oxford University, originator of the Global Innovation Index (GII), and a member of the VinFuture Prize Council. The VIIR project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of industry innovation for Vietnam.

The VIIR project revolutionizes innovation evaluation by delving into not only the national ecosystem but also industry and organizational-level innovation. It recognizes that the elements of industrial innovation can typically be classified into two overarching categories: the first category refers to the economy’s comprehensive ecosystem while the second category pertains to the unique ecosystem of an individual organization. These two integral categories constitute the foundational structure of the analytical layers of the VIIR. This two-layered approach, as well as the twofold analysis of inputs and outputs in productivity and readiness, makes it Southeast Asia’s first comprehensive study on industry innovation and the only one for Vietnam. Specific pillars being assessed in this study are Business Environment or Core, Technology, Human Capital, Leadership, and Business, Societal, and Environmental Innovation. During the first year of the study, organizations from the Healthcare, Hospitality, and Retail Commercial Leasing industries form part of the second category analysis.

VinUniveristy is also an academic partner of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) Global Innovation Index project executed by the Portulans Institute. Additional information about the VIIR project team members can be found here.

In addition to VIIR project lead by Professor Soumitra Dutta (Dean of the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford), VinUniversity is honored to partner with collaborators at Oxford University on several exciting initiatives including:

  • Vingroup 1100 Scholarship program – several highly talented Vietnamese scholars are pursuing Master’s and Ph.D. at Oxford receiving full scholarships.
  • Oxford’s Global Innovation Consultancy (Oxentia) consulted the state-of-the-art campus for VinUniversity
  • Professor Dutta serves on the VinFuture Prize Council which annually selects VinFuture Prize Laureates (One grand prize of US$3 million and three special prizes of US$500,000 each)
